Template for Hair Pullers Over Age Twelve:

Dear (Hairdresser's Name),

I have an issue that is sensitive and makes me feel very uncomfortable about getting my hair cut and styled.

My problem is one you may never have heard of, but is very important for you to understand.  It is called Trichotillomania (compulsive hair pulling).  This means that I pull hair from my (head, eyebrows, eyelashes---fill in this area with whatever is appropriate).

Approximately 5% of the population (or up to 15 million Americans) suffers, usually in silence, because of the social stigmas associated with behavioral problems.  The cause(s) of compulsive hair pulling is not well known and there are many different theories about its origins.

Please be sensitive to my situation and don’t ask me questions or confront me about this issue publicly.  It is difficult enough being in an environment where others might notice my (bald patches, lack of eyebrows, etc.).

My family and I are working to find a solution and you can assist by helping me to look the best that I can at this time.

If you are interested in learning more about trichotillomania and recommendations for hairdressers, please read the article that I have included with this note.

Thank you.
